Mr. Janaka Bandara Thennakoon, who was born in year 1953 in Dambulla, has completed his primary and secondary education at Dharmaraja College. He, who is a holder of Diploma in Business Management, Mass Communication and Information Technology, started his career as a Sub Inspector of Police in 1973.
Mr. Janaka Bandara Thennakoon, who extended his service to the country as the Officer in Charge of several Police Stations in the Island applying his professional skills as well as inborn talents, retired from the Police Service in 1993, whilst serving as a Headquarters Inspector. After leaving Police Service, he has entered the political arena and contested Provincial Council election in 1993 representing Central Province. At that election, he was elected as a Provincial Council Member winning the hearts of the people. Mr. Thennakoon, who contested at the general election in 1994 with the experience gained in the Provincial Council, was elected as a Member of Parliament for Dambulla electorate. Being a significant representative of the people, Mr. Janaka Bandara Thennakoon held office from 1997 to 2000 in the post of Deputy Minister of Labour. Then, he was appointed as the Minister of Provincial Council and Local Government of the Alliance Government after holding office as a Deputy Minister of Health from 2000-2001. Mr. Thennakoon has led the Ministry during his tenure of 6 years to maintain an efficient as well as productive Provincial Council system and Local Government Institutions. In 2010, Mr. Thennakoon shouldered the responsibility as the Minister of Land and Land Development and held office for a period of 5 years as the Minister in charge of the subject. Then, he held office as the Minister of Provincial Councils and Divisional Development from April 2015 to August 2015.
Since then, Mr. Thennakoon performed his responsibilities as a Member of Parliament in the opposition and he was appointed again on 16th November 2019 as the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, provincial Councils and Local Government of the new government by H.E. the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Mr. Janaka Bandara Thennakoon, who has so far proved his capacity as the representative of the public, is committed to create an efficient and productive public service extending political leadership to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
