The week starting on the 01st of July every year has been declared the Official Languages Week. This year too, steps were taken by the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government to implement many programmes to celebrate this week. The National Languages Division of the Ministry, the Department of Official Languages, the Official Languages Commission and the National Institute of Language Education and Training jointly implemented many programs islandwide concurrently with the official languages week.
Under this programme, a tele drama competition was organized, where the awards for the best tele drama, best actress and best music were won by the tele drama Valaikkappu, created by P. Asith Muthukumara Jayaratne. The panel of judges for this competition consisted of Professor Indika Ferdinando, Professor Saumya Layanage and Senior Lecturer Chamara Amarasinghe.
The closing ceremony of the Official Languages Day was held at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration under the patronage of the Hon. Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. Dinesh Gunawardena. The ceremony was attended by a large gathering, including the State Minister, Mr. Ashoka Priyantha, Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Pradeep Yasaratne and Professor Emeritus J.B. Dissanayake. The photograph shows Mr. P. Asith Muthukumara receiving the prize and certificate for the best tele drama director from the Prime Minister.
