Korea International Cooperation Agency has extended its support for a special project for disposing the urban solid waste, which is generated in Uva and Northern provinces, in an environment friendly manner. The expected amount to be spent for this project is USD 10.6 Million. The total amount is a grant of the Korean government to Sri Lanka. The Memorandum of Understanding for this programme was signed today (04) by Mr. S. Aloka Bandara, Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mrs. Kim Myung Jin, Country Director, Korea International Cooperation Agency and Mr. Sampath Bandara, Director General, Department of External Resources at the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government. .
The land required for this project has been identified through an environmental study conducted for two years and action will be taken to build two sanitary landfills in Meegahakiwula in Badulla district and Pompemadu in Vauniya district. Further, action will be taken to provide infrastructure facilities and machines essential for solid waste management for the local government institutions in Vauniya and Badulla districts. In addition, development of infrastructure and generation of direct and indirect employment in the respective areas are among the objectives of this projects. The officers of this ministry as well as the officers of the Korea International Cooperation Agency were present at this occasion.
